Who it's for
Do you need to file a Self Assessment return?
Self Assessment is how HMRC collects Income Tax on income that isn't taxed at source. If any of the following apply to you, you will usually need to file a tax return each year:
- You are self-employed with trading income over £1,000
- You are a partner in a business partnership
- You receive rental income from property
- You are a company director with income not taxed through PAYE, such as dividends
- You or your partner earn over £60,000 and receive Child Benefit
- You have capital gains, foreign income or other untaxed income
We handle the whole return online. You share your figures and records digitally, we prepare the return, and you approve it before we submit it to HMRC.

Deadlines and records
Self Assessment deadlines and what we need
The tax year runs from 6 April to 5 April. If you are filing for the first time, you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October after the end of the tax year. Online returns are due by 31 January, which is also when any tax owed must be paid. Many people also make payments on account on 31 January and 31 July.
From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must also follow Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates. The threshold falls to £30,000 from April 2027. We can help you prepare.
To prepare your return we will usually need:
- Your income from self-employment, property, dividends or other sources
- Records of business or property expenses
- P60 or P45 if you were also employed
- Details of pension contributions, Gift Aid donations and any capital gains
Self Assessment questions
Online returns for a tax year ending 5 April are due by 31 January the following year, and any tax owed must be paid by the same date.
HMRC charges an initial £100 penalty for a late return, with further penalties and interest the longer it is outstanding. We aim to file well before the deadline.
It depends on your income. Self-employed people and landlords can usually claim costs incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. We review your expenses and claim what is allowable.
If your tax bill is over £1,000, HMRC usually asks for advance payments towards next year's bill on 31 January and 31 July. We explain these clearly so they are not a surprise.
From April 2026 it applies to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, and from April 2027 to those over £30,000. We can check whether it applies to you.
We quote after a free consultation. The price depends on your income sources, how many properties or businesses you have and the state of your records.
No. We work entirely online: consultations by video call, documents shared digitally and your return approved by you before we file it.
